The Nepalese Adventure: Day 6

Day 6

Very little to report today:

  • Woke up Early! Grrr!!!!
  • Chick peas and a hard-boiled egg for breakfast & went to school for 10 o’clock.
  • Despite covering them all up, the dust on the computers, keyboards etc this morning was unbelievable.Turns out there are no computer classes today so I spent the day preparing for next lesson which will be on Sunday. (They never mentioned that on the volunteer website!! - what about church?) Found & downloaded software to teach the kids how to use a mouse and some basic typing lessons. This sounds simple but when every page load on Google takes 4-5 attempts due to timeouts and then of course you have to go into several pages before you find what you’re looking for. I was sorely tempted to outsource this activity to someone at home and just have them email me the software!
  • Temporary school after earthquake
  • Someone is coming tomorrow to see if it will be possible to get w-ifi at the school. As there is no cabling infrastructure like we have in the UK, this will need to be delivered by radio signal from the nearest transmitter. Fingers crossed that the signal is receivable. Then I can stop using my phone as the internet source for everything I do. (Though today I found if I put my phone on the school roof, wrapped in a cloth to keep it cool, it has a better signal and then I can sit in the classroom on my laptop!)
  • New school building
  • Disassembled one computer (the disk failed again sadly)  in order to explain component parts as not only do they need to understand how to use a PC but they need to follow the syllabus to understand what a computer is and how it works - all the things we learnt at school. (Well, suspect no computers at school for one or two of you…)
  • Started writing a manual and instructions on how to run the class for the teachers (many of them do not know how to use a computer either). In order for the computer education to be sustained after I leave I need to teach the teachers and prepare documents that can be re-used and passed to other schools too.
  • I won’t mention all the power cuts now as I’m sure you’re getting the picture (2 today) but a valuable lesson learned about regularly saving of the document you’re working on! Doh!
  • Tomorrow is a day off but I’ll be here painting the classrooms with Hindou.
  • Bit of DIY making the electrics safe today at the homestay. Might make a new door for the toilet tomorrow or Sunday. Few pics of the house here:(note the drop by the toilet):

  • Stairs up from my room
    The middle floor
  • A bit with some banister!

The Toilet
  • Been to a party this evening for a 1 year old. Whole village appeared to be there. more food (of course). Several beers and then whisky. Yuck (but hard to say no!).
Laters!

What???? I'm getting the next plane back then!

Here they have some special cutlery just kept for foreigners so haven't used my hand (and you can only use right hand as left is for washing your bum - no toilet paper!!)

PS - you can tell mum I just cancelled all bank cards!

Lots of love, Chris. Xx
