The Nepalese Adventure: Days -1 to Day 1


Days -1 to Day 1

 Day -1 (that's a minus 1)


  •  Need to pack, flight in just over 24 hours... Oh! and i need to go shopping to get some stuff!

Day 0 


  • Packed! Last minute additions were to add some screwdrivers (the kind you have to turn by hand - no batteries!!), tape measure, spirit level, Stanley knife & blades, adjustable wrench and of course... Duct tape
  • At the Airport (Heathrow). Feeling a little trepidation and going to miss my family and friends. Work becoming a distant memory.
  • Almost missed the flight. Lost track of time trying to sort out my mobile with EE. Last to board. Nothing new there though.

Day 1

  • Long flight. Nothing to report of note. Arrived in Kathmandu and transferred to Hotel Buddha ok.
  • Fixed hotel toilet seat which was hanging off (glad I brought those tools already)
    • Work in progress!
  • Orientation tomorrow

Nameste! Day 2 - Orientation After a fairly decent hotel breakfast I was collected from the Hotel and taken to the office of the volunteer organisation for orientation. After we collectively failed to get the overhead projector working with the MAC (lucky I don't work in IT any more ☺) reverted to a Windows PC for a slide deck on: Nepal Facts Birthplace of Buddha The world's only non-quadrilateral national flag A bunch of other interesting things Do's and Dont's: Don't go out after dark - no streetlights and actually nothing happening anyway No prostitutes No other illegal things Do join in everything (except the above of course)☺ Do just relax and go with the flow - everything is on Nepali time! The Nepalese Adventure: Day 11

Day 11 Had a bit of a dental nightmare last night! Seemed to have a piece of chicken bone fragment lodged in my back molar (“Right Maxillary 2 nd Molar” I believe J ). No amount of worrying with my tongue would free it. Could just about get hold of with my fingers but ended up slicing my finger open! After some juggling with 2 iPhones (handy!) 1 as a torch and the other with front facing camera I could just about see it, only to discover it seemed to be a piece of metal – maybe part of a filling or some dental structuring. Decided to leave well enough alone but to avoid it rubbing, I used the “fish scaling hook” implement from my new penknife to push the metal back into place as much as possible. All was ok until I came to clean my teeth: One of the bristles of my toothbrush snagged in it and would not come free (but broke away from toothbrush).  Tweezers from penknife would not grip it. Luckily penknife also has pliers. So there I was, late last night, 2 beers down ...
